Thank you for registering for the Sweetheart 5k presented by Dental Care Center. Please review all information in this email, as it contains your final race instructions. There is important information about packet pickup, your timing chip, and rules for the race course. If you registered another person (especially a child) it is your responsibility to share this information with them and make certain they understand the rules and safety of the race.
PRERACE:Packet Pick Up: All participants must pick up their race packet prior to the start of the race. You are strongly encouraged to pick up on Friday. This way you and your family can avoid waiting in lines to pick up your information on race morning. We will allow friends to pick up your packet if requested. There are two options:Registration: Online registration ends Friday at 9:00 am. Runners can still register at the Friday or Saturday Packet pickup if we have not sold out yet. Due to the popularity of the race, shirts are limited. We still have a few extras, but they are no longer guaranteed.
- 1) Friday: 12:00 - 6:00 pm @ Dental Care Center at 3769 Sunset Avenue
- 2) Saturday: 7:30 - 8:40 am @ Race Start (across from Dental Care Center)
Parking: Click here to view a map of parking options. The main parking lot for the event is at Sunset Baptist Church on Sunset Avenue. You are NOT allowed to park in the Batts, Batts, and Bell lot. This location will be open on Saturday and needs parking for clients and employees. Please remember that all parking lots were loaned to us for the morning of this race. Do not leave any trash behind (even if it is not yours).
Forecast: Be sure to dress warmly. The current extended forecast is chilly but dry. The low is predicted at 32F and the high 53F. Great weather for a PR! Come prepared with a jacket for the awards ceremony.
Numbers and Chips: At packet pickup, you will be given a race number, race packet, timing chip (pic) and shirt. The race number must be pinned to the front of your shirt. There will be safety pins for you to use. Your timing chip (5k only) will be in your bag, and must be attached to your shoe. DO NOT FORGET YOUR CHIP. If you are picking up a packet for someone who is not running, please give us the chip back.
THE RACE:Starting: THE 5K RACE STARTS AT 9:00 AM. We will start on time, so don't be late.
Gathering: All runners should gather in the grass field beside the Batts, Batts, and Bell parking on Sunset Avenue prior to the start. This is where race day packet pickup will occur. Please arrive no later than 8:30 am. The race starts on the other side of Sunset Avenue beside Dental Care Center, but we DO NOT want runners crossing the street until it is time for the race. At approximately 8:50 am, the police will help everyone cross Sunset safely to get us to the starting line.
Timing: This event is chip timed which means your race time begins when you cross the start line and ends when you cross the finish line. For this reason, you do not need to crowd the starting line trying to be the first person to take off. Overall awards are based on "gun time" but all age group awards and couples awards will be calculated by your chip time.
Lining Up: The first 250+ runners had numbers assigned based on your pace (i.e. #1 is the fastest, and #250 is a slower pace). If you are a late registration please use your best judgment. This is important to have a safe and clean start. Please remind young children to not crowd at the start line.
Course Information: If you read one section of this email, read this one. Here are some key rules for the 5k race.
- This is not a closed course; however it is unlikely you will encounter many cars.
- A police car will lead the race.
- Volunteers will man select intersections for safety, but it is the participant’s responsibility to be aware of traffic.
- The course will be marked for turns, and mile markers. If you do not see an arrow, do not turn.
- The race course map must be reviewed prior to the start of the race
- Always stay to YOUR RIGHT of the double yellow line (Candlewood Drive only).
- All other roads were measured using the shortest most direct path.
Beat the Brush & Pound the Paste: The Dental Care Center has added some fun again to this year’s race. If you see a giant toothbrush and toothpaste on the course, don’t be alarmed.
Finishing: The race will finish in the Batts, Batts, and Bell parking lot. The finish line will be marked by a large black FINISH banner. Be sure to run across the timing mat at the arch to end your official time. We will need to get back your timing chip once you have caught your breath.
1 Mile Fun Run: The 1 Mile fun run will begin at the conclusion of the 5k. We expect this will begin around 9:50. The race committee is a big believer in encouraging our youth to stay active. We would love to see all 5k finishers line the streets and finish area to cheer the children and families to the finish line. Make them feel proud of their accomplishments! Registered 5k runners are welcome and encouraged to run along. We will have a small prize for Fun Run finishers after the race.
POST RACE:Post Race Food: After the race we will have Chick-fil-A, fruit, snacks, and bottled water available for runners. Please remember the food is for all runners. . . not just the runners who break 25 minutes. We don’t want to see all of the Chick-fil-A gone before some runners have hit mile 2. Thanks for sharing!
Awards: Everyone is invited to stay for a brief awards ceremony after the Fun Run. It will be chilly, so bring a jacket. We anticipate this will start around 10:15. Including overall, age group, couples, and door prizes, almost one third of those racing will leave with an award, so don't leave early! We have Raleigh Running Outfitters gift certificates, custom medals, wine, and more! We do not mail out awards. I know that seems picky, but it becomes a challenge when a dozen people want something mailed to them after the race.
Dash for the Diamond: At the conclusion of the awards, we will hold a drawing for a diamond from Wade Designs Jewelry. All preregistered 5k runners are entered in the drawing. YOU (not your spouse or friends) must personally be present to win.
FINAL WORDS:Have Fun! We have everything from first timers to elite runners in our race. The Sweetheart 5k is a fun and supportive race. If you are first or last we want you to have a good time. Please be supportive of your fellow-runner and treat everyone with respect before, during, and after the race. We will have over 30 volunteers there to make sure you have a good time. Please don't leave our race without taking the time to say "thank you" to at least one of them.
